The Nigerian army has held a civil-military cooperation media chat in Kano, with the theme: Synergising Civil-Military Cooperation for National Security: Focus on Nigerian Army-Media Relations.
In his address at the event held at Grand Central Hotel, Kano, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, said the army was building a stronger relationship with the media, in recognition of the critical role the media plays in shaping public opinion, informing the people and fostering transparency in governance.
The Chief of Army Staff, who was represented by the General officer Commanding 1 Division, Major General Mayirensa Lander David Saraso, said the Army was fully committed to the protection of law-abiding citizens and their civil liberties, however, a robust partnership with the media was paramount in achieving the objective.
According to him, “the media serves as the bridge that connects the military to the citizens, ensuring accountability, and maintaining a healthy relationship based on mutual trust and understanding.”
The Army also pledged its loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, appreciating him for his “continuous strategic guidance and unwavering support to the Army.”
“While looking forward to fruitful deliberations and productive media chat, I want to re-assure the nation of the unalloyed loyalty of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“I wish to also appreciate Mr President for his continuous strategic guidance and unwavering support to the Nigerian Army.
“It is essential to also acknowledge the support of the citizens of our country which is one of the most crucial elements in our pursuit of stability, peace, and security. The support of Nigerians is indispensable to fulfilling the Nigerian Army’s mandate,” the COAS said.
Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Nosakhare Ugbo said the army was committed to not only safeguarding the country but also fostering relationships that promote understanding and unity among the people.
“Through this Media Chat, we aim to deepen our engagement with the media, enhance public awareness, and cultivate a culture of trust and cooperation that is vital for our collective security and prosperity,” he said.
Guest of Honour at the occasion, Victoria Ajayi, said: “The Army stands as a fortification of our national defence, tasked with ensuring the safety and security of the people in the face of multifaceted security challenges.
“In this endeavour, the role of the media emerges as indispensable, serving as a channel through which information flows between the military and the civilians, fostering transparency, understanding, and mutual trust.”
During his speech at the army-media chat, the Chief of Army Staff disclosed that about 120, 000 Boko Haram fighters and their families in the Northeast have surrendered to the Nigerian Army.
He also said 350 persons were rescued from Sambisa forest last month through their operations, including the thwarting/rescue of thousands of kidnapping incidents/victims across the country.
“You may be aware that the troops of the Nigerian Army operating with other security agencies have made significant milestones in operations across all theatres within Nigeria.
“Specifically, our gallant troops in the Northeast have neutralised hundreds of terrorists including scores of their top commanders thereby liberating several of their enclaves in the Sambisa forest, Tumbuktu triangle and the Mandara mountains.
“Our operations have also significantly restored socio-economic activities to most hitherto deserted communities while frustrating the illegal activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and other criminal elements in various parts of the country.
“As the Nigerian Army continue to conduct kinetic and non- kinetic operations geared towards complete elimination of elements and purveyors of insecurity in our beloved country, I urge all well-meaning Nigerians to keep faith with their army and continue to support our activities,” he said.
